Discover Lanzarote: The Island of Eternal Spring
There’s a reason I chose Lanzarote as my new home over 16 years ago. In fact, it’s not just one reason but at least 7.
Reason 1: Subtropical Climate
Often referred to as the "Island of Eternal Spring," Lanzarote boasts a mild, subtropical climate all year round. With average temperatures ranging from 17°C in winter to 25°C in summer, it's the perfect destination for beach lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. The island also enjoys over 320 sunny days annually – and even if there is a bad-weather day, you might even be happy about it.
Reason 2: Geography
Shaped by dramatic volcanic activity, Lanzarote’s geography is both striking and unique. Timanfaya National Park features vast lava fields and volcanic cones that make you feel as though you’ve stepped onto another planet. Beyond the volcanic terrain, the island boasts golden beaches, rugged cliffs, and the serene La Geria wine region, where vines grow in volcanic soil.
Reason 3: Culture and Tradition
Lanzarote’s culture is a vibrant mix of traditional Canarian influences and modern creativity, largely shaped by its famous artist and architect, César Manrique. Local festivals such as Carnival and Fiestas de San Ginés are celebrated with colourful parades, traditional music, and delicious food. Speaking of food, be sure to try local delicacies like papas arrugadas (wrinkled potatoes with mojo sauce) and fresh seafood.
The island also takes pride in its artisanal crafts, from ceramics and embroidery to basket weaving—perfect for unique souvenirs. Or take part in our accessible activities, such as crafting your own handmade soap.
Reason 4: Gastronomy
Lanzarote’s cuisine is a delightful blend of tradition and fresh, local ingredients. Must-try dishes include:
- Papas arrugadas con mojo: Wrinkled potatoes served with spicy red or garlicky green mojo sauce.
- Fresh seafood: Enjoy locally caught fish like parrotfish, octopus, and limpets, often grilled to perfection.
- Gofio: A traditional Canarian flour used in everything from soups to desserts.
- Lanzarote wines: Produced in the unique volcanic soil of La Geria, the island's wines, particularly Malvasia whites, are renowned for their distinct flavour.
Pair your meals with a view at a seaside restaurant or a local winery for a truly memorable dining experience. Or join us for an exclusive private wine tasting and savour the finest local flavours.
Reason 5: Outdoor Sports
Lanzarote is a hub for sports enthusiasts, earning its reputation as a top destination for professional and amateur athletes alike:
- Ironman Lanzarote: Is the toughest Ironman triathlon in the world, attracting participants from across the globe.
- Cycling: The island’s volcanic terrain and challenging climbs make it a favourite for cyclists. Routes like the ascent to Mirador del Río offer breathtaking views.
- Water sports: Lanzarote is a paradise for surfers, windsurfers, and kitesurfers, with renowned spots like Famara Beach attracting wave riders all year round. For a more inclusive experience, why not try our adapted surf kayaking activity?
- Scuba diving: Discover underwater caves, vibrant reefs, and the fascinating Museo Atlántico—Europe’s first underwater museum. For an inclusive experience, try our adapted scuba diving, specially designed for people with mobility restrictions.
- Trail running: Volcanic landscapes provide exciting routes for runners, including events like the Haría Extreme race.
Lanzarote also supports its sporting community with world-class training facilities, such as Club La Santa, where athletes train in swimming, cycling, and other disciplines under perfect conditions.
Reason 6: The People
Say what you will about the Canarians—that they’re always late or forever in the middle of a siesta. But nowhere has ever felt more like home to me than here—even if I’m more fluent in sarcasm than in Spanish. Jokes aside, there’s something about the island way of life that makes people here genuinely friendly, relaxed, and effortlessly optimistic.
And since so many foreigners like me have also come to love this place, you’ll have the chance to meet people from all around the world and share a laugh with them.
Reason 7: Everything Together
When a place has so many great things going for it, it’s hard not to feel happy. When the sun is shining, the landscapes take your breath away, the food is fresh and delicious, and you’re sharing a laugh with people you’ve only just met – that’s true happiness. Lanzarote is a place full of opportunities, and we’re on a mission to make more of them accessible to everyone.
This island can be your place to recharge, to get inspired, to get out of your comfort zone and try something new or simply a place to work on that tan … (tell me about it, I’ve been working on mine for over 15 years!).
