Meet the Canarian Black Bee

Lanzarote is known for its otherworldly volcanic landscapes, dramatic coastlines, and year-round sunshine. But hidden among its rugged terrain, there’s another, much smaller local wonder at work—the Canarian black bee . If you're looking for a unique, nature-filled experience on the island, visiting a beehive to learn about these fascinating pollinators is an unforgettable adventure.

Unlike the more commonly known honeybees, the Canarian black bee ( Apis mellifera canariensis ) has adapted to the harsh conditions of the Canary Islands. With their dark colouring and remarkable resilience to Lanzarote’s dry climate, these bees play a crucial role in local biodiversity. They help pollinate native plants, ensuring the survival of Lanzarote’s unique flora despite the island’s arid conditions.

What to Expect During the Experience

This exclusive experience is designed for small groups of up to 8 people , including any chaperones or carers, and takes place at a charming finca in the north of Lanzarote. Here, a local trilingual beekeeper will welcome you and introduce you to the fascinating world of the Canarian black bee.

Over the course of 2 to 2.5 hours, you’ll learn about the intricate social structure of a beehive, how bees communicate, and the vital role they play in pollination. Of course, there will be plenty of time to ask all your burning questions!

Time to slip into your protective beekeeper suit and get up close to the hive, where you can safely watch the bees at work. If you'd rather not get too close, that’s absolutely fine—you can observe from a distance and simply soak up the tranquil atmosphere of the finca.

One of the highlights of the experience is sampling fresh, locally produced honey . The honey from the Canarian black bee is known for its rich, floral flavour, influenced by the unique plants and wildflowers growing in Lanzarote’s volcanic soil.

Why This Experience Is So Unique

Lanzarote offers no shortage of incredible activities, from exploring volcanic caves to relaxing on stunning beaches. But if you're looking for something truly special—an experience that is immersive, educational, and deeply connected to nature —visiting a beehive is a rare opportunity to engage with the island’s traditions and delicate ecosystem.

This is the only beekeeping project on Lanzarote that follows a century-old tradition, kept alive in the most conscious and ecological way. Unlike conventional practices, the queen bee is not removed from the hive when her honey production declines, and the bees are never fed artificial supplements like refined sugar to manipulate their output.

The primary focus of this beekeeping finca is neither tourism nor large-scale honey production, but rather the vital pollination of Lanzarote’s plant life . Given the care and effort this requires—and to minimise disruption to the bees— availability for this experience is extremely limited . In collaboration with the finca, we have agreed to let them determine whether a visit is feasible at any given time.

Accessible Wine Tasting in Lanzarote: Wine Not?

Nestled in the beautiful Canary Islands, Lanzarote is renowned for its stunning volcanic landscapes, year-round sunshine, and, of course, its unique local wine culture. Every year, thousands of wine lovers visit Lanzarote just to get their hands on a local wine that is not available in regular supermarkets. Definitively an experience not to miss!

The Vineyards of Lanzarote

Lanzarote’s winemaking tradition dates back centuries, shaped by the island’s volcanic terrain and innovative farming techniques. The distinctive vineyards, locally known as "bodegas," are a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance against the island’s challenging environment.

What makes Lanzarote’s wine production so remarkable is its use of "geria" cultivation. This traditional agricultural technique involves creating shallow pits, called "gerias," in the volcanic ash and cinders. Each geria typically holds a single grapevine and is surrounded by a low semicircular stone wall, known as a "zoco." This protects the vines from the island’s strong winds and captures precious moisture from overnight condensation, creating a microclimate that fosters grape cultivation.

Accessible Vineyard Visits

A wine tasting day with LanzAbility begins with my team and I picking you up in one of our comfortable vehicles. Since drinking alone is usually somewhat frowned upon, we offer private wine tastings for a minimum of two people. But the more the merrier.

Our first stop are the actual vineyards where the local farmers are still growing grapes the traditional Lanzarote way. With no additives or strange chemicals, people from all over the world try to get their hands on a bottle of wine produced in Lanzarote. In fact, the demand is so high that farmers who used to grow vegetables are now cultivating grapes to keep up.

Next Stop: Lanzarote’s Authentic Bodegas

After 9 years of offering private wine tastings, I know exactly where to find high-quality local wine and even better food. We’ll visit two or three wheelchair-accessible local bodegas that are not typical tourist hotspots.

While enjoying traditional Canarian atmosphere and the stunning views on the vineyards and volcanoes, you’ll get to sample up to 10 different local Lanzarote wines. None of these are available in the regular supermarkets, so that’s your chance to get a bottle of your favourite wine and share it at home.

Evening Tapas to Round off the Day

Typically, our local bodegas also offer various delicious tapas to accompany your glass of wine. Be sure to try traditional Canarian dishes such as papas arrugadas (wrinkled boiled potatoes with typical sauces), queso asado (grilled local cheese), or tortilla Española (Spanish potato omelette).

For a bigger bite, we recommend calamares a la romana (battered and fried squid rings), carne fiesta (marinated pork chunks, often cooked with garlic and paprika), and garbanzas (chickpea stew, typically cooked with chorizo, bacon, and spices).

Once Upon a Wine…

Many great stories begin with a glass of wine. But accessible wine tasting in Lanzarote is more than just sampling exquisite wines — it’s about celebrating life, getting to know the local culture, and meeting people from all over the world.

We Love to Find Reasons Not to Do the Things We Enjoy Most

And sure, there are moments in life where time, money, and health can be real issues, simply making it impossible to do the things we want. Like playing around with your sister like a child. Or going on holiday with your loved ones. Or trying something crazy like diving or paragliding.

But often enough, it’s not any real exterior reason that’s stopping us from living a worthwhile life. It’s us. It’s us telling ourselves we can’t or we shouldn’t.

Wanderlust Travel Magazine Event @ Spanish Embassy, London

In December 2023, our holiday guest Hayley became the first power wheelchair user to experience the Luna Tour at Timanfaya National Park in Lanzarote. Her story was published in six local and national British newspapers, creating a lot of awareness for Lanzarote and LanzAbility.

A few weeks later, I received an email from Laura Field, Special Features Assistant Editor at Wanderlust Travel Magazine. She had heard about us in the press and invited us to write a 1,000-word article on accessible travel in Spain with a special mention of Lanzarote.

A Feature in Wanderlust Travel Magazine

Admittedly, the name of the magazine rang a bell, but it wasn’t until I forwarded the email to Laura, our PR manager and copywriter, that I realised how big an opportunity this really was. “Wanderlust Travel Magazine is really well known, David!” Laura told me excitedly. “Let’s do it!”

For those of you who, like me, are not too familiar with it, Wanderlust is the UK's longest-running travel magazine and the largest, with "More than 30 years of taking the road less travelled”. So, I said yes to both Lauras.

‘Spain for All’ Campaign

The "Spain for All" campaign, launched by the Spanish Tourist Office (UK), aims to make Spain's tourism sector more accessible and inclusive. It highlights Spain's dedication to welcoming all visitors by improving infrastructure and services for those with disabilities. In support of the campaign, Wanderlust created ‘The Wanderlust Sustainable Travel Guide to Spain’, which was released in May 2024. You can find LanzAbility’s feature ‘Accessibility in Spain: a journey to inclusive travel’ on pages 162-165.

Since I had several holiday guests coming over, I couldn’t leave the island to attend personally. Fortunately, I was able to convince my team member Ayo, who lives close to London, to represent LanzAbility at the event.

Why talk about sustainable travel in Spain?

Did you know that in 2023, Spain welcomed 85.1 million foreign visitors? Lanzarote alone receives over 3 million tourists per year, with an additional 500,000 visitors arriving via cruise ships. While it’s wonderful to see so many people enjoying their time on our little island, it’s important to make sure it’s sustainable. This means that it doesn’t harm Lanzarote’s unique nature or local economy.

Sustainable travel is accessible travel

While Manuel Butler, UK director of the Spanish Tourist Office, and other sustainability advocates explored strategies for conserving ecosystems, preserving heritage, combating climate change, and fostering social responsibility, LanzAbility made a very important contribution to the Wanderlust panel discussion. Sustainable travel is accessible travel.

If we’re going to move forward and create a sustainable travel future in Spain, environmental initiatives must cater to the needs of all travellers, including those with disabilities. This means that accessible infrastructure should also prioritise eco-friendliness, and vice versa.

We look forward to seeing travel in Spain and especially in Lanzarote becoming both more sustainable and accessible and, as the islanders would say, “poner nuestro granito de arena” (Engl. do our bit) with our adapted holiday experiences for people with disabilities.

Power Wheelchair User at Timanfaya National Park

Hayley Became the First Power Wheelchair User to Experience the Luna Tour at Timanfaya National Park

Despite making multiple visits to Lanzarote, Hayley, aged 52 from the UK, had never managed to partake in the Luna Route tour, which winds through the stunning volcanic landscapes of Timanfaya National Park.

This renowned geological wonder attracts over a million visitors each year. The guided tour takes you through the park's heart, revealing breathtaking geological formations from volcanic eruptions in the 18th century. The terrain is so unique and otherworldly that it resembles the surface of the moon, hence the name "Luna Tour."

Tour buses were not sufficiently accessible

The Luna Route tour requires an authorised tour bus with official guides, and until recently, these buses lacked adequate adaptations for wheelchair users. Hayley, with her power wheelchair, was unable to transfer to a regular seat or navigate the steps of the official tour buses, making the Luna Tour inaccessible for her.

However, this visit was different. On her second stay as a holiday guest of LanzAbility, Hayley told us she’d love to visit the public displays at Timanfaya, even though she couldn't partake in the Luna Tour.

Upon arriving at the park, David was informed that two newly acquired buses were equipped with electric wheelchair lifts. After explaining Hayley’s situation to the official guides, emphasising how important this trip was to her, they agreed to take her onboard.

Hayley makes history

Several photos captured the historic moment when the LanzAbility team, alongside three official guides, worked together to operate the lift for the first time. Hayley, the first-ever power wheelchair user, was successfully lifted onto the bus, making her dream a reality. “I can’t believe this is finally happening!” Hayley exclaimed, delighted, after being lifted onto the tour bus.

A small step for Hayley, a big step towards accessibility for all

This seemingly small accessibility win turned out to be the highlight of her stay, closely followed by the actual Luna Route. With Hayley’s permission, we decided to publish her story in the press to create awareness for this incredible news. It was printed in six local and national newspapers, which all agreed that this is a huge step towards a more accessible Lanzarote.

Big talk, big action: Crazy DAVID’s first Paddleboarding

Talk the talk, walk the walk

We have all heard the saying, "If you are going to talk the talk, then you should be prepared to walk the walk."

Well, yesterday I decided to step outside of my comfort zone. I had established a great collaboration with Alessandro, an Italian hunk who operates a kayaking and SUP business here on Lanzarote. Alessandro has looked after several of my clients; some have been totally blind, others have had various disabilities, and some have been able-bodied. I have been kayaking with Alessandro before with a group of clients and friends, and it was an enjoyable experience.

My first and last time on a SUP was 10 years ago

I had only ever previously participated in SUP, or as some call it, paddleboarding, once about 10 years ago. I had the opportunity to attend a three-hour SUP clinic which Alessandro had arranged for locals and visitors. He had the support of a British SUP race champion to teach us the techniques for beginners or to improve our existing skills.

I made it clear to both of them that I had to wear ear plugs to prevent water getting in my ears due to my hearing loss and several operations, and that I wasn’t a water sports person due to my lack of experience in the ocean. I always prefer dry land activities, and I have never been a good swimmer because I can’t keep my mouth closed long enough.

Let’s start nice and slowly

After our safety briefing and warm-up stretching exercises, we all took to the water, first staying close to the shoreline in a sheltered bay. After an hour or so, my confidence was growing as I started to get the hang of it. We had mastered the art of getting on the board from in the ocean and had learnt some of the paddle techniques.

We had mainly been paddling from the kneeling position on the board and I had managed to stay high and dry. We then started going out further along the bay and I felt confident in what I had achieved so far. Then after about two hours, I started applying a more advanced technique we had been shown.

This is when it happened!

I misjudged my actions. I had ventured to a point in the ocean that was over three metres deep, and then, SPLASH, I went under. At first, I thought, "No big deal," I automatically remembered what we had been shown. My first attempt to get back on the board wasn’t successful, so I calmly started kicking my legs while holding on to the board as I moved closer back to the beach. But the wind kept me in deeper water, so I tried another attempt to get back on the board, but without success.

I must have swallowed half of the Atlantic Ocean

Suddenly, I started to panic. Jane was nearby and she stayed with me until Alessandro arrived on his board. BUT it seemed like feckin ages and the board had flipped upside down so I didn’t have anything to grip on to. I shouted out for help and had started breathing erratically as I had panicked. When Alessandro arrived, I knew immediately that I would be OK as he is a true professional and knew exactly what to do. He put out his arm for me to hold on to and I probably stopped the circulation as I gripped so tightly. He helped me get up on his board and took me back to the beach.

At the time I wasn’t aware of the effect it would have on me. I was told to relax and rest and drink water. I said, "In a strange way I am actually pleased it happened so I can relate to the situation should any of my clients ask me." I can now assure them that they are in the hands of a true professional with Alessandro and he is very experienced and has an excellent way of looking after everyone.

Get back on that horse (or SUP)

After a rest, I went back out on the board, but I could not, and Alessandro stayed by my side all the way. He encouraged me to progress with his support. But my confidence had taken a big hit, and I was not able to relax like before.

So yes, I have been there, done it and got the t-shirt myself. Many people know that I am the happy-go-lucky guy who balances on the edge of rocks thousands of feet high on the edge of a cliff, who has abseiled and zip-lined many times, who has bungee jumped in New Zealand and was the first-ever member of the public to bungee over Loch Ness in Scotland, who has done white water rafting at grade 5 rapids, etc.

All this results in people saying I’m crazy — and live up to the name of Crazy David.

Soaring Like a Bird: Tony’s Adapted Paragliding Experience

A few accessible adventure activities on the island

In May 2024, a dream came true for our holiday guest Tony, aged 61, from Milton Keynes in the UK. Although he relies on a wheelchair and can walk only with great difficulty, he recently experienced what it’s like to paraglide over Lanzarote’s stunning terrain.

Tony’s expectations were modest

He came to visit Lanzarote to enjoy the sun, the beaches, and the lava fields. Having heard of LanzAbility, he looked forward to a few accessible adventure activities on the island, but nothing too crazy. Never in his wildest dreams did he imagine soaring above Lanzarote's breathtaking volcanic landscapes in a paraglider.

Meet our accessible paragliding partner

We’re continuously seeking accessible experience providers to collaborate with for our holiday guests. Paragliding doesn't necessarily require extensive physical exertion. Once seated in the harness and assisted with take-off, only minimal physical effort is required, making it accessible to those with mobility impairments.

Lava Fly has implemented various adaptations such as specialised harnesses and safety measures to ensure a safe and enjoyable flight. As you know, safety is always our top priority for everything we do.

Out of the wheelchair and into the adapted paraglider harness

The LanzAbility team took Tony to the meeting point at the summit of a volcano in time for his 30-minute sunset flight. With assistance from the Lava Fly team, Tony transitioned from his wheelchair into specialised gear for the paragliding flight and received instructions about the safety measures and the flight itself. Tony still seemed a little nervous at first but gained full trust in his experienced guide who told him to sit back, relax, and enjoy the flight of a lifetime.

3, 2, 1 and off they flew

All we could see from the volcano top was a beautiful image of Tony and his guide taking to the skies like a bird, off into the sunset. A GoPro camera on the paraglider recorded the entire experience, including the expression on Tony’s face while soaring over the stunning volcanic landscapes below.

A dream come true

“This was beyond anything I could have imagined,” Tony shared after he landed safely on solid ground and was assisted back into his wheelchair. “I felt so free! What an incredible experience!”

These words are motivation enough for us at LanzAbility to continue our mission of making Lanzarote accessible to everyone. Tony will never forget this day in his life. Many of life's best moments come for free. Lanzarote has much to offer its visitors, including stunning volcanic landscapes, delicious Canarian cuisine, and endless sunshine throughout the year. However, tourists can enjoy another surprising feature: watching the planes arriving at the airport, which can be seen right above their heads.

The Lanzarote Airport is between Playa Honda and Matagorda, near the beautiful Guacimeta Beach. With around 100 planes coming to the island daily, tourists can witness a unique and exhilarating experience as these planes rush through the sky, less than 100 metres from the sunbathers' heads, causing little sun eclipses.

Initially, I was unaware that these aeroplane landings could be such an exciting experience for many people, but seeing the expressions of delight on my holiday visitors' faces, particularly the children, made me realise that it is indeed a special and unique sight to most people.

For Haley, who is confined to an electric wheelchair, it was the highlight of her entire stay. The LanzAbility care team took her to Guacimeta Beach to watch the unofficial plane show.

About one year ago today, Crazy DAVID became more than just a name – it became a brand.

Here’s how it all began:

Fifteen years ago, my journey on Lanzarote began with volunteering in the community, where I helped the local farmers out in their vineyards.

It was not long until they first started calling me "DAVID El Loco". Why? Because I worked as hard as they did, without a paycheque, and they thought I was crazy for it.

As the founder of Adventure Holidays Lanzarote , I embraced the "crazy" label. Whether balancing on a cliff's edge or pushing the limits on rough terrain, I aimed to deliver unforgettable experiences for my adventurous clients

But the craziness didn't stop there.

Originally, Trevor and his friend were supposed to spend a well-deserved holiday on Sunny Lanzarote. Unfortunately, his friend fell ill a few weeks before the trip. Trevor still wanted to go, but knew he needed help due to his sight condition.
